A fundamental part of the Gymnastic and Poetic parts of the St. Joseph’s education is trades work. We do not have the boys learn carpentry and other trades so that they all become tradesmen, but so they can learn confidence, wonder, and fortitude. As Saint John Bosco said: “It is not the end; it is rather the instrumental means for improving the way of life.”

The Bosco Program provides young men with the opportunity to develop mastery in several crafts with the object of giving them a beautiful life and possibly a way to support their futures. At this time, the Bosco program is running ahead of the rest of the academics, as a once-a-week trades program.

Craftsmanship

In the raising of boys to men, manual labor will play a necessary role.  John Bosco observed that the academic instruction of boys is enhanced by physical work. In part, this is because men are not pure intellects. The are made for mastery of skills, and the first step is competency, which young men crave. But there are also crucial qualities which cannot be formed in the classroom, in particular the cardinal virtues, which entail mastery of physical passions and right relations with other men. For this, physical work with other men is instrumental, and the skilled trades are especially suitable.

Athletic Prowess

This is a paragraph where you can include any information you’d like. It’s an opportunity to tell a story about the company, describe a special service it offers, or highlight a particular feature that sets it apart from competitors. Make sure it fits the general tone and voice of the brand, then adjust the font, size or scale to customize the style.

Agricultural Skills

Young men derive great benefit from learning to cultivate and care for living things. Agricultural work provides opportunities to learn discipline from hard, at times unpleasant work, and from the inflexible needs of living things which require constant tending. Agriculture entails attention to the particular characteristics and qualities of living things, and involves a man in a process that follows its own imperatives and is in many ways outside of his control. This cultivates virtues that are very different from those encouraged by an engineered world, where men have the illusion of mastery by design, and learn to disregard the natures of things, and in the end even of themselves.
